Misinformation

The Coronavirus

We all know that the coronavirus is a troubling disease that no one has found the cure or treatment to yet. Because of this it is resulting to hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide with millions of cases. However, most of the cases/deaths are from the U.S. So the question is: why does the U.S have so many more cases compared to other states. This is because of the misinformation that is giving the people false rumors about the coronavirus.

People who say things like, "the coronavirus is propaganda," "drinking bleach or rubbing it on your body cures you," or "wearing masks can cause CO2 poisoning." Although these claims sound incredibly irrational or baseless, people still believe these and end up making harmful decisions. The false rumors were proven false, however, people still choose to follow the claims and continue to make the wrong choices.

Why have schools reopened at 1M+ cases when they were closed at less than or equal to 1000. It is because of the theory that kids can't spread/contract it. This is a misinterpretation of the statement that kids are less likely to contract it. Kids can still contract coronavirus meaning that one kid can infect others, so putting them in a school with hundreds to even thousands kids is a disaster waiting to happen. Not only are the kids at risk but the teachers who are adults are even more prone to catching the coronavirus.

Lastly, the claim, "If you have coronavirus, you'll know," has a harmful effect on others too. If you have coronavirus you may not show symptoms but you could still be a carrier. So you may not even know that you have it, meaning it is safer to stay away from others. If symptoms do show they may or may not be those of the coronavirus since it shares flu and cold symptoms. So if symptoms like: coughing, muscle aching, asthma, or even pneumonia, it is not guaranteed to be coronavirus but it is still safe to stay away.

False rumors about the coronavirus will only harm, not help anyone, so please make sure to listen to trusted sources like official health care websites or people who studied in the medical fields and know what they are saying. If some random person starts posting or telling you baseless or irrational claims, do not trust it unless you know this person is an actual doctor in health care, otherwise you'll only be doing more harm than good.
